The World Summit on Sustainable Development (or Earth Summit 2002) was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002.

Some have considered this Summit a disappointment, because the formal negotiations produced no binding results. However, meaningful side agreements were made, and the participants did commit to various non-binding communal goals.

Particularly notable was George W. Bush's decision not to appear personally, but rather to send a delegation including Colin Powell.
