Some people assert that Yaba's primary claim to fame is the fact that it serves as the home of Lagos' premier girls' school, Queens College. Others, more inclined to view these issues with objective impartiality, realise that Yaba has no claim to fame and exists as just another rundown and highly depressing section of the Lagos Mainland Local Government.

Other institutions of interest in Yaba are the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, the Yaba College of Technology, Igbobi College, and, of course, the University of Lagos.
