It is situated on the north bank of the Yangtze River, opposite the city of Zhenjiang. Location: in the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jinghang Canal (Grand Canal of China), in the mid south of Jiangsu province, the north bank of lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the south end of Jianghuai Plain.

Neighboring Areas: Taizhou, Zhenjiang, Nanjing, and Tianchang of Anhui province.

History

A History of 2480 years, founded in Chunqiu Period; a leading economic and cultural center and major port of foreign trade and external exchange since Tang Dynasty reached her peak in early Qing Dynasty as a major trade exchange for salt, a government regulated commodity. She faded off and turned into a average sized township after the emergence of the railways, which replaced the Jinhang canal as the transport lifeline.

Climatic Features

Subtropical monsoon climate with humid changeable wind; longer winters for about 4 months, summers 3 months and shorter springs and autumns, 2 months respectively; frost-free period of 222 days and annual average sunshine of 2176.8 hours.
